Type Locality and Naming

SW Guangxi. The Guangxi Petroleum Geological Team erected the Napai Formation in 1974. The section for the designation is in Napai of Shanyu of the Fusui County, Guangxi.


Lithology and Thickness

The Napai Formation is mainly represented by purple red sandstone and siltstone with mudstone. The formation is more than 896 m in thickness.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base marked by gray purple conglomerate lies unconformably on the Upper Triassic limestone.

Upper contact

Its top is not observed; but is probably an unconformity.

Regional extent

The formation occurs in the Shiwandashan, Napai, Nanan, Shangjin and Paitan basins. Lower part of the formation is made up mostly of macroclastic rocks. Upper part is pyroclastic rocks. The formation is 896-1147 m in thickness.

Fossils

The formation yields bivalves Trigonioites rotunda, T. trigonus, T. laotiae, Plicatounio suzudii; Dinosauria Prodeinodon kwangshiensis, Asistosaurus kwangshisnsis, Sinopliposaurus fusuiensis.
